I don’t know what to think about Ghandi
Posted on 29th July, 2008
If I was given the opportunity to change one thing about the world, it would be to eradicate violence — and I think this would be a fairly popular opinion. Well, perhaps that is the wrong way to put it. Violence is largely the only effective response to violence, and violent movies sure are fun to watch. I should use the term aggression; a term that doesn’t lock itself to violence, and one which has room under it’s umbrella for other abhorent practices such as coercion, theft and — albeit roughly ...
NetNewsWire Icon Replacement
Posted on 14th July, 2008
With the release of NetNewsWire for the iPhone 2.0 operating system, I’ve decided to start using the desktop counterpart on my iMac — along with a NewsGator account to keep everything synced (which I have found myself to be fanatical about since my trial of MobileMe started - which is pretty cool by the way, despite Apple’s immediate scaling problems).
I do, however, hate the default icon for the app. It’s ugly, and does not fit in with the rest of the shortcuts in my dock. So, I made my own using the “official” RSS feed ...
ICANN does a thing, Edd disagrees
Posted on 27th June, 2008
Government-sponsored monopoly strikes again. In what could be falsely interpreted as a small step in the right direction, interweb naming and numbering regulator ICANN have given the go-ahead for complete freedom (of course, with valid reason) over what appears after the final dot in your domain name.
This, I have no beef with. It’s with a residual decision to open addresses up to non-roman character sets such as Asian Kanji and whatever that Arabic squiggle is called.
Look down at your keyboard. Chances are you don’t see any Asian characters. Now imagine you’re a Chinese native living in the west wanting to ...
Laaame.

While I seem to be on a blogging spree today I feel compelled to show you, my humble reader who will hopefully subscribe, this photo I snagged walking back to my flat today. Click it for full view.
Lame. As much as I love my girlfriend, I never want to be these two.
Also, Simon pointed out — and I agree — that these t-shirts don’t actually make sense.
BBC: Blogger Arrests Hit Record High
Posted on 17th June, 2008
From the BBC: Blogger arrests hit record high.
It’s OK, though, it’ll never happen here — I can almost smell the breath this false reassurance is uttered with.
While we in the west are laggardly operating with a slight more freedom; we are going in this exact direction, full speed ahead. My fear is that the peoples’ breaking point is far too late.
This is Why I don’t Digg!
Posted on 17th June, 2008
I haven’t used Digg for a very long time now. By that I mean it hasn’t been on my regular visiting pattern. It lost it’s place in my bookmarks bar and RSS feed list a long time ago. Sure, I’ve been there once in a while to see what’s up, but my attention span never surpasses a minute with that site.
Today I went to Digg again, and I was reminded why I don’t go there. This story, a graph showing CEO ...
Yes, Markup SHOULD be Beautiful
Posted on 30th May, 2008
My latest period of employ has had me using HAML — a templating language who’s use seems to appear most prominently in Rails. It’s purpose, this case, is to replace ERb as the language used to infuse your build your markup to be sent down the tubes to your browser and lives by the ethos of “Markup should be beautiful“. Yes, it absolutely should.
Haml itself is a fairly solid language. While it still certainly does not feel natural to me (after 3 weeks of using it, considerably longer than the 20 minutes they ...
Do You Think Creationism Should be Taught in Schools?
Posted on 19th May, 2008
I’ll start this rant off with the debate of creationism. The people of the world seem to be fairly divided on this issue — while some believe we evolved to be as we are today from simple, single-cell organisms sunbathing on top of rocks; others believe we were created in the image of God (who, by this theory, should already be a human — which raises even more questions. I’m not about to get into that). Some people, not exclusively those that believe in the theory of creationism, think that it should be taught as gospel in schools - and there are those that think teaching both this and the theory of evolution would just confuse the poor kids. The argument goes ...
Programming = Interesting. Who knew?
Posted on 28th April, 2008
Caffeine-induced insomnia strikes again. I was having a brutal time trying to sleep last night, so I decided to give up at about 7AM and try and bore myself to sleep by writing a random binary calculator program in Perl. As you can see, it’s an hour later and it has done nothing to help the situation because I now can’t help thinking how it can be perfected. Oh, and I installed a few WP plugins that I’ve been meaning to try out too.
It is an extremely simple program with very little room for refactoring but; take a look. What can be improved here? It’s probably just ...
HCI Gone Wild: Admin Your Network with Quake
Posted on 23rd April, 2008
Today, The Register speaks of “L3DGEWorld“, a GNU network administration tool like no other. Taking a very fresh approach to user interface, L3DGEWorld drops the user in the familiar setting (well, familiar to us geeks) of Quake III, allowing the user to pretty much run amok about their network gunning down rogue processes and locking down firewalls instantly.
To those viewing this as just a geek-bait gimmick, the story at ‘Reg brings up some very valid points about the inherent advantages of such an environment, but here are a couple ...
